Jake Gyllenhaal will make his Broadway debut this fall in Nick Payne’s play Constellations, slated to begin performances on December 16 at the Manhattan Theatre Club’s Broadway home stand, the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre. Director is Michael Longhurst, who helmed Gyllenhaal’s terrific showing two years ago in an earlier Payne play, If There Is I Haven’t Found It Yet, which ran off-Broadway under the Roundabout Theatre Company flag.
Described as “an explosive new play about the boundless potential of a first encounter, free will, and friendship,” Constellations is a co-production of MTC and London’s Royal Court Theatre, by special arrangement with the Ambassador Theatre Group and Dodger Properties. Official opening date is January 13, 2015. The play opened in 2012 at the Royal Court and transferred to the West End, winning the Evening Standard Award for Best Play and an Olivier Award nomination for Best Play.
