Cannes: Adaptation Of ‘True Detective’ Creator Nic Pizzolatto’s ‘Galveston’ Ready To Roll; Embankment Selling

Low Spark Films and Jean Doumanian Productions have completed financing on Galveston, the adaptation of True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto’s novel. Embankment Films is handling foreign sales here in Cannes with shooting to start in October. Financing for the film was arranged by CAA and Cinetic Media, which also will handle the film’s North American rights. Tyler Davidson of Ohio-based production and finance company Low Spark Films (The Signal, Take Shelter) has joined Jean Doumanian and Patrick Daly of Jean Doumanian Productions on the producing team. Janus Metz is set to direct with Matthias Schoenaerts starring. The female lead is still to be cast. Pizzolatto’s first novel, Galveston centers on Roy “Big Country” Cady, who is diagnosed with a terminal illness the same day he discovers his loan-sharking bar-owning boss wants to kill him. He gets the better end of an ambush by the boss’ gun-toting cronies but takes two sisters he finds hiding in the apartment with him and makes a run for Galveston, Texas. That proves to be a bad call. “Galveston is one of the most soulful and electrifying scripts I’ve read in years,” says Davidson, “and I couldn’t be more excited to join Jean and Patrick in realizing Nic Pizzolatto’s singular vision on the big screen.”
