OPENING: Neighbors (UNI) trashes Spider-Man 2 with around $49M weekend; Uni said $51M+ but ends at around $49M; Legends Of Oz: Dorothy Returns (FREE) earns an impressive A CinemaScore, but gross doesn’t show it; Moms’ Night Out (Sony/TriStar) lights out in lackluster performance; Chef (OPRD) on six screens for a stellar $34K per screen.
6TH UPDATE, 2:20 PM: Final box office numbers are in and the numbers are pretty much as we said this early AM. Certainly, Universal had to know on Sunday morning that the likelihood of a $51M weekend for Neighbors was a bit of a stretch. But even retailers know that $2 sounds more expensive than $1.99 … and $48.8M doesn’t sound as good as $49M or even $50M. So, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 ended with only $35.5M and Fox’s The Other Woman really kicked it with $9.6M for the three-day as did Sony’s other film Heaven Is For Real which dropped only 13% from last weekend to pulled in another strong $7.4M; the lower-budgeted pic from director-writer Randy Wallace has grossed $75.7M. The two newcomers — Moms’ Night Out and Legends Of Oz: Dorothy Returns — didn’t open well, and this despite an A CinemaScore for the latter animated film.
Opening next week: Godzilla from Warner Bros./Legendary Pictures which is going to take more of Spidey’s breath away; Million Dollar Arm (Disney) which had sneaks on Saturday in 416 theaters; Chef, which had a great start this past weekend on six theaters from Open Road, will expand; and, finally, The Immigrant (The Weinstein Company) the Jeremy Renner, Joaquin Phoenix and Marion Cotillard starrer.
