ABC Renews ‘Modern Family’, No Returning Comedies From ABC Studios

UPDATE: Trophy Wife co-star Marcia Gay Harden confirmed the series’ cancellation on Twitter; Mixology‘s Frankie Shaw too confirmed the cancellation on Twitter. The Neighbors also is not coming back.

PREVIOUS: ABC saved one of the most obvious renewals for last (for today), with flagship comedy series Modern Family picked up for a sixth season. It comes from 20th Century Fox TV, which is yet to get new series pickups from the network, where it has comedies Cristela and Fresh Off The Boat in contention.

Meanwhile, the buzz tonight is what comedy series did not get picked up. (ABC is not done and will continue the process tomorrow.) One is a head-scratcher, Warner Bros TV’s The Middle, which launched with Modern Family. It is coming back. Also not on the list tonight but expected to return is 20th TV’s Last Man Standing. But the future does not look rosy for the other MIAs: ABC Studios’ The Neighbors, Mixology and Trophy Wife and WBTV’s Suburgatory and Super Fun Night.

ABC is not confirming any cancellations, but I hear none of the ABC Studios series are expected to come back.  Suburgatory‘s chances also appear slim, especially after ABC picked up show creator Emily Kapnek’s new show, Selfie. (Super Fun Night‘s chances look ever slimmer.) The network also ordered a new comedy series form The Neighbors creator Dan Fogelman, fairytale musical Galavant. For a little while, Mixology was heating up for renewal, but it started cooling off over the past couple of weeks as its ratings struggles continued. ABC brass are expected to sleep on the decision before making the final call, but it looks like the network won’t return a single comedy series it owns.
