Matias Varela Joins ‘Point Break’; Luke Kleintank Cast In ‘Max’

EXCLUSIVE: As Alcon Entertainment scrambles to recast the lead Point Break role recently vacated by Gerard Butler, Swedish actor Matias Varela has locked in a supporting role in the upcoming remake. Story updates the Kathryn Bigelow-helmed 1991 original to center on an ex-extreme sports athlete turned FBI trainee assigned to go undercover to investigate a string of robberies by a band of fellow adrenaline junkies. Varela (Snabba Cash, Arne Dahl, The Borgias) will play Grommet, an extreme sports athlete and member of Bodhi’s gang of outlaws. In his native Sweden, Varela earned a Swedish Oscar nod for his turn in the final Snabba Cash film, Livet Deluxe. He’s repped by APA and Agentfirman Planthaber/Kildén.

Bones, The Good Wife, and Pretty Little Liars actor Luke Kleintank has landed a role in MGM’s family adventure Max. The pic follows a Belgian Shepherd Malinois military dog who returns from Afghanistan traumatized by his handler’s death. Adopted by the soldier’s family, he bonds with his fallen partner’s 14-year-old brother. Boaz Yakin is directing from a script he wrote with Sheldon Lettich (Lionheart, Double Impact). Kleintank will play a returning vet who worked with Max, the titular canine. Thomas Hayden Church and Josh Wiggins are already set to star. Kleintank will next be seen in upcoming indies Sacrifice, with Dermot Mulroney, and 1000 to 1: The Cory Weissman Story opposite Beau Bridges. He’s repped by Innovative Artists and Robert Stein.
