Amma Asante Set For ‘Brits to Watch: The Screenings’ In U.S.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts announced Tuesday that it will profile director Amma Asante (A Way of Life, Belle) next month at the first of this year’s “Brits to Watch: The Screenings,” a series of showcase events in New York and Los Angeles that introduce outstanding British film talent to the US film industry. On April 1 in New York and April 3 in Los Angeles, Asante will be introduced at a screening of her second feature film Belle, which premiered at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival, and opened this year’s Palm Springs International Film Festival. Belle is inspired by the true story of a mixed-race girl raised as an aristocratic lady in England around the time of the abolition of slavery. The film will be released by Fox Searchlight in the US on May 2 and in the UK on June 13.

CTBF Teams With Anchor To Launch National Care Plan
The Cinema and Television Benevolent Fund and nonprofit housing and care provider Anchor are partnering on the film and TV charity’s National Care Plan. The first-of-its-kind venture announced Tuesday enables those who have worked in the film or commercial TV industries for at least two years — and their parents — to receive a discount in any Anchor care home across England. Anchor operates almost 100 care homes and retirement housing to rent at 700 sites across England. “As a trade charity we have a responsibility to respond to the growing needs of film and television professionals experiencing hardship across the country,” CTBF President Barry Jenkins said. “We have seen an increasing demand for care support regionally and we believe this unique partnership with Anchor is a great way to answer that need and a smart way for not-for-profits to work together for mutual benefit.”
