Terence Carter & Suzanna Makkos Upped To EVP As Fox Merges Development & Current

This has been an ongoing back-and-forth process over the last several years, with the broadcast networks at different times opting to fold current programming into their drama and comedy departments or re-establish standalone current operations. Fox now is doing the former, promoting head of drama Terence Carter and head of comedy Suzanna Makkos to EVPs, with both adding oversight of respective current series to their development duties. Under the previous structure, Carter and Makkos ran drama/comedy development and then paired up with their current programming counterparts to shepherd their newly picked-up series for the first season. Both will report to Fox  COO Joe Earley. In their previous roles, Carter and Makkos had reported to Fox Chairman Kevin Reilly, while current programming had reported to Earley. Earley now is taking over more day-to-day responsibilities at the network, with Reilly pulling away from those to focus on big-picture issues, like the network’s new pilot model.

As part of the restructuring on the comedy side, Lauren Levy Neustadter has been promoted to SVP, and Samata Narra has been a VP for the past several months, both serving as Makkos’ senior lieutenants. On the drama side, Carter’s key lieutenants will include Charlie Andrews, who has been elevated to SVP, as well as SVP James Oh. The network’s Event Series team will continue to be led by SVP Shana C. Waterman. Waterman as well as Fox’s head of alternative Simon Andreae continue to report to Reilly.

Fox previously reorganized its current departments in February 2013, following the departure of longtime head of current Marcy Ross. At the time, Fox’s VP Current Programming Oh was upped to SVP, overseeing all of Fox’s existing scripted series and managing Fox’s current programming department. He will now be part of Carter’s drama development/current team. “Combining our development and programming functions allows us to provide more cohesive support to shows – from inception to finale – and forge even deeper, more collaborative relationships with the creative community,” said Earley. “Suzanna and Terence are both gifted executives who – in true Fox spirit – aren’t afraid to take big creative swings.”
