HBO Adapting Indie Feature ‘A Teacher’ As Drama Series

EXCLUSIVE: Hannah Fidell’s feature A Teacher, one of the buzzed about titles at last year’s Sundance Film Festival, is getting a series adaptation as a drama at HBO executive produced by Jay Duplass, Mark Duplass and Michael Costigan. Also titled A Teacher, the project is being written/executive produced by Fidell and BAFTA-winning British writer Daniel Brocklehurst, former showrunner of the original UK series Shameless, with Fidell also set to direct the potential pilot. The series centers on a high school teacher in her late 20’s in the midst of a torrid affair with one of her students.

The project originated with Costigan and his company Cota Films. Costigan saw Fidell’s film at Sundance 2013 and teamed with her and Brocklehurst for a TV adaptation. Costigan then brought in Jay and Mark Duplass whose film Cyrus he produced for Fox Searchlight. The Duplass brothers are already in business with HBO with their new comedy series Togetherness, which starts production this month. Here is the trailer for A Teacher, starring Lindsay Burdge, which was released theatrically and on VOD by Oscilloscope. There is no talent attached to the series version at this time.
