But after a slow start, multi-cam comedies had a strong finish at the network, snagging three of the last four comedy pilot orders — one yesterday and two tonight. The newly picked-up comedy pilots  are The Money Pit and Fifth Wheel.

The Money Pit is inspired by the 1986 feature starring Tom Hanks and Shelley Long. Amblin Television, the TV division of Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment, which produced the movie with Universal Pictures, is producing with Universal Television. Former The Office writer-producer Justin Spitzer, who is under an overall deal at Uni TV, wrote the adaptation and executive produces with Amblin TV’s Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank. The movie, written by David Giler and directed by Richard Benjamin, starred Hanks and Long as a couple who are tricked into buying a distress-sale mansion that becomes the proverbial “money pit,” requiring an endless string of repairs. The NBC adaptation centers on a newlywed couple that navigates the challenges of modern romance while their house crumbles around them. This is Amblin TV’s third pilot pickup, joining Red Band Society at Fox, which is on a series track, and drama The Visitors at ABC. The network also has a straight-to-series order at CBS for Extant for a green light at all four broadcast networks, as well as a pilot order at TNT for Ed Burns’ Public Morals.
