RATINGS RAT RACE: OK Start For ‘Chicago PD’; ‘SVU’, ‘Revolution’ & ‘Middle’ Return Up

The ratings bar for live viewing of entertainment series is pretty low these days, especially at 10 PM. By those standards, the debut of NBC’s Chicago Fire spinoff, Chicago PD, did OK, drawing a 2.0 rating in adults 18-49 last night. It edged its mothership series, which premiered with a 1.9 in the same Wednesday time slot in fall 2012 and was up 43% from the premiere of Ironside in the hour this past fall. (Chicago PD actually did better than any drama that has launched in the 10 PM slot this season besides breakout The Blacklist.) Chicago PD had a little stronger lead-in, with veteran Law & Order: SVU (2.1) up 31% from its last original on Nov. 20 to score its highest demo number for an hourlong episode in an year. ( SVU did a 1.8 the night of Chicago Fire‘s debut.) Also up in its return from hiatus was NBC’s Revolution (1.6), which jumped 14% from its last original.

CBS had a 2 Broke Girls-themed Wednesday night, with 2 Broke Girls reruns leading into The People’s Choice Awards, hosted by the comedy series’ stars Kat Dennings And Beth Behrs. The two-hour awards broadcast drew a 2.3 in adults 18-49 and 10.2 million viewers. In the demo, People’s Choice Awards were down 15% from last year’s telecast to a six-year low. In total viewers, the special was up and logged its largest audience in four years. CBS won the night in 18-49 and total viewers.

ABC’s flagship comedy Modern Family (3.5) came back from hiatus even with its last original on Dec. 11. Its lead-out, Super Fun Night (1.8) also held steady at 9:30 PM, while The Middle (2.2) perked up at 8 PM, up 10% from its last original. A second new Super Fun Night aired at 8:30 PM to a 1.5, matching the last outing in the time slot of cancelled Back In The Game, which had a weaker lead-in. ABC capped the night with a reapeat of the David Blaine magic special (1.4). Fox aired the movie Step Brothers (1.2)
