R.I.P. Patrice Chéreau
La Reine Margot director Patrice Cheréau has died. He was 68. The veteran French helmer’s credits also include 1998’s Those Who Love Me Can Take The Train and 2001’s Intimacy. He was considered by many in France as as a visionary who also directed his share of operas from Elektra to Peer Gynt. He also acted in films including Andrzej Wajda’s Danton and Youssef Chahine’s Adieu Bonaparte. His 1988 Hamlet won five Molières, France’s equivalet to the Tonys. La Reine Margot in 1994 won the Jury Prize in Cannes. Chéreau had not been much heard from in recent years, but this news certainly comes as a blow to the French film community and to those who ever had the occasion to spend time with him.
