EXCLUSIVE: Always on the lookout for actresses with breakout potential for R-rated comedies, Judd Apatow thinks he has found a winner in Amy Schumer, and Universal Pictures agrees. The studio has optioned an untitled script that Schumer is writing as a star vehicle for herself. Apatow, who as producer guided early turns from Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy in Bridesmaids and Lena Dunham in HBO’s Girls, is producing through his Universal-based Apatow Productions. He is working with Schumer to develop the story and shape the script.
Schumer first came on the radar with standout turns on Comedy Central roasts of Roseanne Barr and Charlie Sheen. That led the network to launch her as writer/star and exec producer of the series Inside Amy Schumer, which premiered to Comedy Central’s highest ratings this year. Before that, she starred in the hourlong special, Mostly Sex Stuff for Comedy Central. Schumer and Apatow are represented by UTA and manager Jimmy Miller of Mosaic.
