2012 Sundance: WME Signs 'The Raid' Helmer Gareth Evans

EXCLUSIVE: On the eve of the Sundance premier of the Indonesian action film The Raid, director Gareth Evans has signed with WME. All the agencies have been courting him since that martial arts film made its premiere at Toronto, where it won the Midnight Madness Award. The distribution rights to that movie are controlled by Sony thanks to a deal made in Cannes on partial footage, and Sony Pictures Classics will take The Raid to Sundance and then SXSW before releasing it March 23. Evans, the Welsh filmmaker who lives and makes his movies in Indonesia, signed with Management 360 last fall. He will move right into a sequel of The Raid, which will shoot in Jakarta. SPC will have first crack at for US and Latin American distribution. And Screen Gems is developing a remake. The sequel will reteam the filmmaker with the film’s producers at XYZ Films.
