‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ Avoids ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Over Memorial Day And Heads To 2023 – Updated

UPDATED: It stands to reason that Lionsgate’s tentpole John Wick: Chapter 4 would move off Memorial Day weekend 2022 after Paramount plopped Tom Cruise’s long-awaited sequel Top Gun: Maverick on May 27. The Chad Stahelski-directed John Wick fourthquel will now debut on March 24, 2023, as revealed in a teaser that dropped Wednesday.

I’m told by sources that the actual reason why the fourthquel shifted was because production stopped on the movie, and needs to resume at a latter point in Japan. The Keanu Reeves movie is shooting around the world. Even if Lionsgate wanted to release this movie on Memorial Day weekend, they could not given the status of the production. In six month long-lead tracking obtained by Deadline dated Dec. 3, John Wick: Chapter 4 was besting Top Gun: Maverick by 90% in overall first choice, this despite the fact that there’s been zero marketing dropped for the fourthquel (not counting today’s teaser) and Paramount has had extensive promotions on the Tom Cruise sequel out there for close to two years. The tracking variance here may have something to do with brand awareness, however, it makes zero sense for both Top Gun: Maverick and John Wick: Chapter 4 to compete against each other given how they’re both prized tentpoles for their respective studios. Many rival distribution bosses tell me they’ve taken great care to avoid dating on Top Gun 2; it’s just expected to be that massive of a pic. Paramount was so excited about the movie, they showed off the first 13 minutes at CinemaCon, and moved the title to Memorial Day weekend in hopes to have the most ideal global box office conditions for the film.

The only other movie on John Wick Chapter 4‘s new date is Sony’s untitled George Foreman biopic.

John Wick: Chapter 4 stars Keanu Reeves, Donnie Yen, Laurence Fishburne, Bill Skarsgård, Ian McShane and more. Michael Finch and Shay Hatten wrote the screenplay. Stahelski, Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee produce. The franchise through three movies has racked up $584.7M at the worldwide box office.

Here’s the announcement from Lionsgate today.
