The Czech Republic has become the latest country to name its selection for this year’s International Oscar race, choosing Agnieszka Holland’s biographical drama Charlatan.

The film premiered at the Berlinale earlier this year and was selected for Telluride before that event was cancelled. It has also been a box office success in Czech Republic, grossing north of $1.5M despite the pandemic challenges to theatrical distribution.

Holland’s latest movie tells the story of Czech healer Jan Mikolášek, who cured hundreds of people using plant-based remedies.

The 2021 Oscars will take place on April 25. Singapore has also now submitted its entry to this year’s race, selecting Anthony Chen’s Wet Season.
