UPDATED with latest winner:  The Palm Springs Film Festival said Wednesday Yuh-Jung Youn is the recipient of the 2021 Spotlight Award, Actress for her role in A24’s Minari.

The Lee Isaac Chung-directed pic about how one generation of a Korean American family risks everything to plant dreams for the next on their Arkansas farm, Youn plays the sly but loving grandmother in the drama that also stars Steven Yeun and Yeri Han. In her first American film, the prolific Korean actress, who also starred in Netflix’s Sense8, has already received SAG and Critics Choice Award nominations.

The news comes after Palm Springs said Daniel Kaluuya will receive the fest’s International Star Award, Actor for his role in Warner Bros’ Judas and the Black Messiah.

They now join fellow honorees including Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom star Viola Davis, the recipient of this year’s Desert Palm Achievement Award, Actress; Andra Day, who will receive the Breakthrough Performance Award for her feature film debut The United States vs. Billie Holiday; Leslie Odom Jr receiving the Spotlight Award, Actor for his work in Amazon’s One Night In Miami; Netflix’s The Trial of the Chicago 7 winning the Vanguard Award; Riz Ahmed, who stars in Amazon Studios’ Sound of Metal, winning the Desert Palm Achievement Award, Actor; Nomadland‘s Chloé Zhao as Director of the Year; Carey Mulligan winning the International Star Award for her performance in Promising Young Woman; and Gary Oldman the recipient of the Chairman’s Award for his performance in Netflix’s Mank.

Anthony Hopkins, who scored a SAG Award nomination for his starring role in Sony Pictures Classics’ The Father, is the recipient of this year’s Career Achievement Award.

Palm Springs is bestowing its awards as usual this year despite opting to cancel its 32nd edition, which had been scheduled to run February 25-March 8 but was derailed by the coronavirus pandemic. The fest’s Film Awards Gala is traditionally the kickoff to the festival, which sits in the heart of awards season. That in-person event has also been canceled this year.
