UPDATED: Kim Kardashian West is among a growing group of media influencers and entertainment figures who plan to freeze their Facebook and Instagram accounts Wednesday, asking that others follow to protest misinformation on on social media.
The initiative, driven by the Stop Hate for Profit coalition, is part of a weeklong campaign “demanding parent company Facebook take action to address hate, extremism, and disinformation on its platforms,” the group said. It previously organized a protest earlier this summer when more than 1,200 businesses and nonprofits stopped advertising on Facebook for one month.
Sacha Baron Cohen, Katy Perry, Naomi Campbell, Jennifer Lawrence, Judd Apatow, Ashton Kutcher, Amy Schumer, Sarah Silverman, Jason Alexander, Kate Hudson, Jamie Foxx, Leonardo DiCaprio, Michael B. Jordan, Rosario Dawson, Ed Helms, Isla Fisher and Mark Ruffalo are among the names who have signed on for Wednesday’s stoppage, along with groups including the Anti-Defamation League, Color of Change, the NAACP and GLAAD.
“Misinformation shared on social media has a serious impact on our elections and undermines our democracy. Please join me tomorrow when I will be ‘freezing’ my Instagram and FB account to tell Facebook to #StopHateForProfit,” Kardashian West said in a post Tuesday.
Kardashian West alone has 188 million followers on Instagram and 30 million on Facebook.
