REFRESH FOR UPDATES…. The death of Chadwick Boseman tonight has sent shockwaves through Hollywood at the loss of a man who was as full of grace as he was talent.

The Black Panther star passed away Friday from colon cancer at age 43. Boseman had been battling the disease since 2016, the year he first appeared as T’Challa in the Russo Brothers-directed Captain America: Civil War. In a career that spanned performances as baseball legend Jackie Robinson in 42, soul superstar James Brown, future Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall and the cultural touchstone of Wakanda’s king and Marvel superhero, Boseman was most recently seen in Spike Lee’s Vietnam drama Da 5 Bloods.

The passing of the NAACP Image Award-winning Boseman came on the very same day that Major League celebrates the legacy and life of Brooklyn Dodgers icon Robinson, who shattered the sport’s racial barriers when he took the field in 1947.

Soon after the announcement on social media of Boseman’s death on Friday evening, tributes began to pour in from peers and admirers across the industry including former president Barack Obama, Denzel Washington, Kerry Washington, Spike Lee, Ava DuVernay, Presidential candidate Joe Biden and running mate Sen. Kamala Harris, Disney boss Bob Iger, Oprah Winfrey, Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige (along with others in the Black Panther/Marvel family), the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and Black Panther co-star Sterling K Brown.

He was a gentle soul and a brilliant artist, who will stay with us for eternity through his iconic performances over his short yet illustrious career. God bless Chadwick Boseman.
– Denzel Washington

We are all heartbroken by the tragic loss of Chadwick Boseman — an extraordinary talent, and one of the most gentle and giving souls I have ever met. He brought enormous strength, dignity and depth to his groundbreaking role of Black Panther; shattering myths and stereotypes, becoming a long-awaited hero to millions around the world, and inspiring us all to dream bigger and demand more than the status quo. We mourn all that he was, as well as everything he was destined to become. For his friends and millions of fans, his absence from the screen is only eclipsed by his absence from our lives. All of us at Disney send our prayers and heartfelt condolences to his family.

Chadwick was a superhero on screen and in life, and it’s impossible to imagine working at the level he has while valiantly battling his illness. His legacy as a person and an artist will inspire millions. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family during this difficult time.
– Ted Sarandos, Netflix Co-CEO & Chief Content Officer

Chadwick’s passing is absolutely devastating. He was our T’Challa, our Black Panther, and our dear friend. Each time he stepped on set, he radiated charisma and joy, and each time he appeared on screen, he created something truly indelible. He embodied a lot of amazing people in his work, and nobody was better at bringing great men to life. He was as smart and kind and powerful and strong as any person he portrayed. Now he takes his place alongside them as an icon for the ages. The Marvel Studios family deeply mourns his loss, and we are grieving tonight with his family

It’s not very often you have a picture of the day you meet someone. But I have one with Chadwick. The man was one of the greatest actors of his generation, but he was so much more. He was a true intellectual, completely unpretentious and down to Earth, and the biggest heart. I loved him. It was a joy working with him and grateful for the time we shared. A true hero.

The last time I saw Chadwick, it was across a crowded room. It had been a while, but I made my way and as I apologized to him for my role in the dissolution of a project we were meant to make together, he paused me, placed his hand on my shoulder and said: “Don’t even trip.” Followed by: “You good, though?” This was well within his very private fight. I have no doubt  I’m not alone in this experience. This is an unspeakable sadness.
Barry Jenkins, Moonlight director

Chadwick was a force of nature full of abundant talent and strong spirit. Tonight all baseball teams are wearing 42 to honor Jackie Robinson, and today marks the anniversary of Dr. King’s iconic I Have a Dream speech. Chad was special, he played Jackie Robinson with respect and reverence for the legacy of a man who changed the world. Chad was kind and genuine, I will miss him dearly and I will never forget him. My heart goes out to his wife and family.

Here’s to an incredible man with immeasurable talent, who leaned into life despite his personal battle behind the scenes. May we take this as a reminder that you never truly know what the people around you might be going through – treat them with kindness, and cherish every minute you have together. I have to say this because it’s on my heart. We all must do and be better about how we discuss people aesthetically. I remember reading things people were saying about Chadwick’s dramatic weight loss without ever considering his circumstances. Now, my heart is breaking because a young and vital talent has ascended, and I pray he never felt the withering assault of public scrutiny. I pray that his family knows just how beloved he is. That he was always a perfect gentleman with strong convictions. Always gracious. Graceful. Many of us are inconsolable right now; but I’ve put my mother on the case. I’ve prayed and asked her to show him around heaven and to look in on us every once in a while!! 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

I didn’t have enough time that fateful night to share what i whispered to you. So now i will. But not before sharing what you said first. You said “O, go claim that award that’s had your name on it from the gate…from the moment i met you. I whispered back, “Thank you Bose…for being the super hero I knew you were from the moment i met you.” Then I quickly added….”we still gotta do that movie together!” You replied: “Bet.” … I hear you whispering more than ever my dearest brother of a Black Panther. One of my biggest honors was being one of your biggest competitors and an even bigger friend. You are HUGELY missed, but I got you next to me even more on the rest of this run. A wise man told me this morning…”In the Kingdom no crown is wasted. When one man drops his crown, another man picks it up. Pick it up O!” * * From king Chadwick to king Hardwick….i will do just THAT my brother. Rest in your glory 🙏🏾🦅 👑 PS: Brave has worn his Black Panther costume everyday for the past 3 weeks.. trust me I’ll make sure he keeps wearing it…..
