Screen Gems’ ‘Grudge’ Reboot Will Now Scare In 2020

Sony Pictures

Nicholas Pesce’s Screen Gems remake of cult movie Grudge will no longer be popping up on June 21 as planned, rather Jan. 3 next year.

Pesce was here at Sundance a year ago with his zany psychological horror comedy Piercing which starred Mia Wasikowska and Christopher Abbott. That movie will hit theaters, and VOD on Feb. 1 via Universal Pictures Content Group.

The first weekend of the year is always prime to launch a genre movie, and this year Sony opened Escape Room to $18.2M, above tracking expectations, with the pic heading to a $50M+ domestic take.

Currently, Universal has an untitled Blumhouse movie on Jan. 3, 2020. It will be interesting to see if both Sony and Uni vie to divide the genre audience with a PG-13 and a R-rated release, or if one will blink.
