Endemol Shine, Michael Strahan Plot U.S. ‘Money Drop’; Pure Flix Sets WGN America Time; Film Rise’s ‘Miseducation’ To HBO — NATPE Briefs

Endemol Shine North America is teaming with Michael Strahan’s SMAC Entertainment to develop a new U.S. version of global game show The Money Drop.

Strahan, the former NFL standout who is co-host of Good Morning America, will serve as an executive producer. Endemol Shine North America and SMAC announced at NATPE that they are exploring potential primetime and daytime opportunities, including national syndication, for the series.

Created by Endemol Shine UK’s Remarkable Television, the format originally titled The Million Pound Drop Live has been locally produced in 54 different global territories. In the UK, where a second series currently airs as The £100K Money Drop, a five-day-a-week strip on Channel 4.

“We are thrilled to partner with Michael and the team at SMAC Entertainment to develop an all-new version of ‘The Money Drop’ for an American audience,” says Michael Weinberg, Executive Vice President, Syndication, Endemol Shine North America. “This is a format that has worked successfully all over the world and the game concept itself is a lot of fun and engaging.”

Strahan recalled seeing the show while in London. “I immediately knew we had to help bring it back to the U.S.,” he said. Strahan. “On behalf of myself, Constance Schwartz-Morini and the rest of the team at SMAC, we’re excited to take ‘Money Drop’ to market with the amazing team at Endemol Shine.”

The show is the third game show produced by SMAC, joining The $100,000 Pyramid and The Joker’s Wild.

While Money Drop is not its backed by first-timers, another company announced its first original series sale during NATPE.

Pure Flix/Quality Flix said the 13-episode first season of Malibu Dan the Family Man will air during the paid programming block on WGN America starting in February.

“We’ve produced a wonderful family series with a stellar ensemble cast and I can’t wait to share this first season of this comedy with America,” said David A.R. White, co-founder of Pure Flix Entertainment and star of Malibu Dan the Family Man.

FilmRise, meanwhile, said HBO has acquired U.S. rights to 2018 Sundance prize winner The Miseducation of Cameron Post. The drama starring Chloë Grace Moretz will  air on the HBO programming services early 2019. Danny Fisher, CEO of FilmRise, made the announcement at NATPE.

“This is an important film that we are proud to have released theatrically, and are thrilled it has found a home on the HBO programming services,” Fisher said. “Now it will be available to millions of subscribers who have come to expect top-quality entertainment and enjoy ground-breaking films.”

The Miseducation of Cameron Post won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance and was released theatrically in some specialty runs in late summer.

Melissa Wohl of FilmRise and Christopher Grunden of HBO brokered the deal.
