Roma The Favourite
Netflix/Fox Searchlight

UPDATED with full list, more details: The 91st Oscar nominations were announced this morning in a presentation by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, with Alfonso Cuarón’s memory movie Roma from Oscar newcomer Netflix and Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Favourite from perennial frontrunner Fox Searchlight leading the way 10 nominations apiece.

Black Panther
. Disney

Warner Bros’ A Star Is Born and Annapurna Pictures’ Vice followed with eight noms, and join Roma and The Favourite in a diverse Best Picture race that has been shaping up all awards season. The other noms include Focus Features’ BlacKkKlansman from Spike Lee, Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody from 20th Century Fox, Universal’s Green Book and, in a first for a movie based on a comic book, Disney/Marvel’s Black Panther broke through on the list of eight. It scored seven noms overall, though not for director Ryan Coogler.

Fox Searchlight (15 total noms) and Netflix also led the way in total noms among studios. The former scored three additional for Can You Ever Forgive Me? (with berths for Melissa McCarthy and Richard E. Grant in acting, and in Adapted Screenplay), while the streaming service saw three extra noms for its Coen Brothers pic The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (for Original Screenplay, Costume Design and Original Song).

The actor and actress races mostly reflected the Best Pic noms this morning, with triple noms for The Favourite‘s cast including Olivia Colman in lead and Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz in supporting; Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga as well as Sam Elliott for A Star Is Born; and Vice‘s Christian Bale in lead and Sam Rockwell and Amy Adams for supporting.

Green Book scored a lead for Viggo Mortensen and supporting for Mahershala Ali among double acting noms, a list that includes McCarthy and Grant in Can You Ever Forgive Me? and Yalitza Aparicio and Marina de Tavira for Roma. Other notables making the cut in the Best Actor race: Rami Malek for playing Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody and Willem Dafoe for playing Vincent Van Gogh in At Eternity’s Gate.

Spike Lee scored his first-ever Best Directing nom today for BlacKkKlansman; he had three noms overall today along with Picture and Adapted Screenplay. Roma‘s Cuarón had four individual noms including in that intriguing Director race, which includes two foreign-film entries (Roma and Paweł Pawlikowski’s Cold War) along with The Favourite‘s Lanthimos and Vice‘s Adam McKay.
