The news comes after McQuarrie piloted Mission: Impossible – Fallout to the franchise’s top total box office; the pic toplined by Tom Cruise and the sixth in the Par canon grossed $791.1 million worldwide after its July 2018 release.
According to Variety, which broke the news, the new films will be shot back to back, with release dates coming in summer 2021 and summer 2022. The year before that — specifically, June 26, 2020 — comes another Paramount-Cruise franchise, Top Gun: Maverick.
McQuarrie and Cruise have paired on several films. The scribe wrote Cruise star vehicles including The Mummy, Valkyrie and Edge of Tomorrow. He wrote and directed Jack Reacher and the last two M:I films, Fallout and Rogue Nation, which together grossed more than $1.4 billion globally.
