‘On The Basis of Sex’ & ‘Beale Street’ Expand; ‘Mary Queen of Scots’ Cracks $15M: Specialty Box Office – Update

On The Basis Of Sex
Focus Features

UPDATED with more numbers and analysis. Carryovers dominated the specialty scene over the weekend, with two platform releases making especially wide breaks.

Participant/Focus’ On The Basis of Sex jumped to more than 1,900 theaters in its third outing, grossing more than $6.2M to boost its cume to $10.55M. Annapurna’s If Beale Street Could Talk went past 1,000 engagements in its fifth weekend, grossing almost $2.4M to reach $7.68M to date.

Cohen Media Group

The sole newcomers were Cohen Media Group’s The Aspern Papers and event screenings of The Met Live: Adriana Lecouvreur via Fathom Events.

Starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Vanessa Redgrave, Aspern took it slow in 10 locations, grossing $9,277 for a $928 per theater average. Picked after its Venice premiere, the Venice-set film was ticketed for this low-key weekend on purpose, Cohen Media Group said, and won’t likely extend far beyond its initial runs.

Adriana Lecouvreur gathered up $1.3 million from 900 North American locations on Saturday. Fathom Events reported attendance of 70,000 across North America, and 120,000 worldwide including 800 theaters in 54 additional countries. The opera is the sixth of 10 live cinematic transmissions during the 13th season of The Met: Live in HD.

The opera series now reaches more than 2,200 theaters in 70 countries. The Metropolitan Opera reports selling more than 26 million tickets since starting theatrical screen programming in 2006. Next up is the Met’s revival of Bizet’s Carmen on Saturday, February 2.

Focus/Participant’s boost to On The Basis of Sex came as its main character, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, made news for missing oral arguments at the U.S. Supreme Court while recovering from cancer surgery. Starring Felicity Jones and Armie Hammer, the feature grossed $6,227,000 in 1,923 theaters, averaging $3,238. Over the previous weekend, while still in limited release, it grossed $1.6M for a healthy average of $14,370.

If Beale Street Could Talk
Annapurna Pictures

Golden Globes attention for Beale Street , notably the Best Supporting Actress win by Regina King, helped Annapurna open the throttle in the film’s fifth weekend as it played 1,018 locations, grossing $2,388,953 and averaging $2,347. In 335 theaters over the prior weekend, the Barry Jenkins adaptation of James Baldwin’s Harlem-set novel grossed $1.84M for a per-theater average of $5,503. If Beale Street Could Talk has now cumed $7.68M and will be one of many titles whose commercial fortunes could be dictated by the Academy Award nominations, which will be announced January 22.

Amazon added four runs for Cold War, a foreign-language winner among many critics’ groups and the National Board of Review, in its fourth outing. Directed by Pawel Pawlikowski, the title grossed $87,552 averaging $8,755. The total dipped slightly from the previous weekend’s $90,763 in six locations ($15,127 PTA).

Focus’ Mary Queen of Scots crossed well over $15M in its sixth weekend, while trimming its theater count to 829. The feature, starring Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie, grossed $847K, averaging $1,022, which is about half its $2,041 PTA in the previous weekend, when it pulled in $2.14M from 1,052 theaters.

Searchlight’s The Favourite, which took Best Actress at last weekend’s Golden Globes, grossed $1,125,000 in 512 locations in the three-day, averaging $2,197. That brings the Yorgos Lanthimos-directed film to just under $21.5M in its two months of release.

Annapurna more than quadrupled the reach of Nicole Kidman starrer Destroyer to 27 runs, grossing $151,745 for an average of $5,620 per situation. Sony Classics took Stan & Ollie to over a dozen locations for $88,808 and an average of $6,831.

Doc Free Solo played 97 Imax screens this weekend. National Geographic Documentary Film/Greenwich Entertainment reported its run in the theaters averaged $7,647. Overall, the Telluride debut grossed $812,741 in 154 locations in its 16th weekend in theaters, averaging $5,277 bringing its total to over $12.32M.
