The Good Doctor executive producer Daniel Dae Kim is stepping in front of the camera on the popular ABC medical drama.  The former Hawaii Five-O co-star is set for a key recurring role on The Good Doctor, from Sony Pictures TV and ABC Studios. Kim will play SPOILER ALERT Dr. Jackson Han, a brash new Chief of Surgery at St. Bonaventure. Dr. Han’s arrival will shake things up at St. Bonaventure and specifically put Dr. Shaun Murphy’s (Freddie Highmore) career in jeopardy.

Kim will make his debut in Episode 15 (See photos of him in character above and below the story), and has been booked to appear in the last four episodes of the 18-episode second seasons, one of them directed by The Good Doctor star Freddie Highmore. There is no word whether Dr. Han would stick around beyond that but that is considered a possibility.

Kim’s character adds a new wrinkle to The Good Doctor‘s recent storyline, in which Melendez and Lim competed to succeed Andrews as Chief of Surgery only for Andrews to announce that he would be retaining the title in addition to his new responsibilities as hospital president.

Kim was instrumental in getting The Good Doctor off the ground as he identified and brought over the Korean format the series is based on. When the project, written/executive produced by House creator David Shore and executive produced by Kim, was sold to ABC in fall 2016 and piloted in spring 2017, Kim was still on Hawaii Five-0. Ever since his exit from the CBS drama in summer 2017, there had been speculation that he may join The Good Doctor cast. The time was finally right for Kim to appear on the show in his first TV acting gig since Hawaii Five-0.

“As a fan of our show, I’m thrilled to be doing a guest arc with such a talented, kind and hard-working cast. David [Shore] and I have been looking for the right opportunity and we’ve found a character that’s both dynamic and surprising,” said Kim. “It’s an added bonus for my character to be directed by our own Freddie Highmore, who’s proving to be as talented behind the camera as in front of it. it’s been a lot of fun already and I’m excited for the episodes to air.”

The Good Doctor revolves around Highmore’s Shaun Murphy character, a young autistic surgeon who has savant syndrome.

The seriesalso stars Richard Schiff as Dr. Aaron Glassman, Antonia Thomas as Dr. Claire Browne, Nicholas Gonzalez as Dr. Neil Melendez, Hill Harper as Dr. Marcus Andrews, Tamlyn Tomita as Allegra Aoki, Christina Chang as Dr. Audrey Lim, Fiona Gubelman as Dr. Morgan Reznick, Will Yun Lee as Dr. Alex Park and Paige Spara as Lea Dilallo.

Erin Gunn and Sebastian Lee are also executive producers, along with Seth Gordon, who directed the pilot.

The Good Doctor returns for the second half of Season 2 on Monday, Jan. 14 when the series will resolve the fall finale cliffhanger, involving a deadly virus that put the hospital on lockdown..

In addition tor his seven-season portrayal of Chin Ho Kelly on Hawaii Five-0, Kim is known for his role as Jin Soo Kwon on Lost.
