‘The Kominsky Method’ Eyes Season 2 Renewal By Netflix; What’s the Holdup?

Netflix

EXCLUSIVE: It took more than two dozen Netflix original comedy series for the Internet network to land its first best comedy series Golden Globe for Chuck Lorre’s The Kominsky Method. The show, starring Michael Douglas and Alan Arkin, was the only homegrown Netflix original to score awards last night, winning 2 statuettes, including lead actor in a comedy series for Douglas.

The eight-episode first season of The Kominsky Method was released almost two months ago. So, with A-list auspices and critical acclaim right out of the gate, why hasn’t the show been renewed for a second season yet?

No one would comment, but I hear Netflix and producing studio Warner Bros. TV are in renewal discussions. I hear there is no issue with the actual pickup — Netflix wants a second season — but with its exact size.

I hear the streaming network has been lobbying for an expanded second season of as many as 13 episodes. That would be in line with another successful aging-themed Netflix single-camera comedy from a network sitcom royalty starring screen icons, Marta Kauffman’s Grace and Frankie, toplined by Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin, which has been producing 13-episode seasons.

I hear negotiations have been focused on the episode count for Season 2, with both 13 and 10 discussed, but star Douglas had indicated that he would like to do fewer, closer to the Season 1 total. For the Oscar winner, this is the first TV series since The Streets of San Francisco more than four decades ago.

Following his Golden Globe win last night, Douglas may be more amenable to a larger second season. In his acceptance speech he was effusive about the experience working in streaming.

“Streaming has made television much more acceptable to film people,” he said. “That’s why you’re seeing so many film actors go in… That’s why now you’re seeing situations like The Kominsky Method, a half-hour comedy which can be 25 minutes long or 40 minutes long. You can say anything you want. There are no commercials. It’s as close as you can get to a short film. For me, at this point in my career and at my age, this is fantastic. I love it.”

The Kominsky Method, about an aging former actor-turned-acting coach (Douglas) and his agent and friend (Arkin), represents a wild-card entry in Lorre’s long career, dominated by broad, multi-camera network sitcoms, from Grace Under Fire and Cybill to Two and Half Men, Mike & Molly, The Big Bang Theory and Mom. No show of his had never gotten more than two Golden Globe nominations in a single year until The Kominsky Method scored three this season, converting two into wins.

With all his commercial success to date, Lorre was visibly moved by the recognition for The Kominsky Method in his acceptance speech last night. “This doesn’t happen to me,” he exclaimed, appearing lost for words.

Lorre has been invigorated by the critical acclaim of his latest series, and has said that he would love to do another season. With all parties involved ready for more, I hear negotiations on a second season renewal may be completed as soon as this week.
