There’s a new biopic about a revered British pop star from the 1970s who assaulted the charts worldwide while exuding style, charisma and sheer innate talent. But this one hasn’t made more than $700 million.
Given the massive and unprecedented global succuss of Bohemian Rhapsody, Paramount must be salivating at the thought of releasing Rocketman, starring the Kingsman franchise’s Taron Egerton as Elton John. And today we get a look at some new photos from the film that hits arenas, er, theaters on May 31. Check them out below; that’s an older one above.
Billed as “an epic musical fantasy about the uncensored human story of Elton John’s breakthrough years,” Dexter Fletcher’s Rocketman — one word, unlike the song title but evoking a superhero — also stars Jamie Bell, Richard Madden and Bryce Dallas Howard. Lee Hall wrote the script.
There certainly are numerous parallels between Queen and the artist formerly known as Reginald Dwight. Both acts rose to fame in the Me Decade and would assault charts around the world for years to come — though Freddie Mercury and company’s U.S. ascent was less spectacular. Both singers slayed their audiences from the stage and belted out their numerous hits with palpable glee.
So have a look at Egerton as Elton, and let’s see if Rocketman has anywhere near the successful launch as the Bohemian Rhapsody, which is by far the most successful musical biopic of all time.
