CNN’s New Year’s Eve Coverage Outstrips MSNBC, Fox News Channel

CNN’s New Years Eve Special, in which Anderson Cooper tequila shots on the hour and Andy Cohen melted down when de-umbrella-d by Times Square security, thumped Fox News Channel and MSNBC.

Cohen’s second year co-hosting CNN’s New Year’s Eve Live with Anderson Cooper clocked 1.82M viewers from 8 PM until 12:30 AM. FNC averaged 1.383M; MSNBC logged 1.075M at that time.

In the news demo, CNN was tops with 786K viewers aged 25-54, topping the combined FNC (262K) and MSNBC (154K).

In the immediate walk up and aftermath of the  Times Square crystal-ball drop, from 11-12:30 AM ET, CNN topped cable news networks with 2.797M viewers (1.197M in the news demo), to FNC’s 1.840M viewers (358K in news demo). MSNBC averaged 691K viewers (113K in news demo).

CNN’s audience in that 90-minute period marked the only one with a median age within that target demo. Median age of CNN’s audience: 52 years. Median age of FNC’s: 64 years. MSNBC audience had a median age of 68 years.

Cohen and Cooper handled CNN’s coverage for the duration. On Fox News Channel, Griff Jenkins and  Fox Nation’s Carley Shimkus co-hosted coverage from 8-10 PM, after which Fox Business Network’s “Kennedy” Montgomery and Pete Hesgeth co-hosted from 10 PM until 1 AM. MSNBC telecast The Year’s 10 Most… in which Brian Williams and Nicolle Wallace counted down the most compelling/unbelievable news stories of the year, at 11 PM.
