Despite the much publicized gains of Netflix and other streamers, Hollywood studios got good news this week about solid increases in ticket sales and attendance, as we discuss in this week’s episode of The Bart & Fleming Podcast. And the good numbers stemmed not just from sequels but from several well-performing original projects such as Bohemian Rhapsody and Crazy Rich Asians.
The “originals” also are gaining attention in some cases due to their unexpected casting — Christian Bale cast as Dick Cheney in Vice , or even Nicole Kidman playing a tough, bar-hopping detective in Destroyer.
All this lifts hopes, too, for the struggling indie scene, which lacked the usual breakthrough projects last year.
