EXCLUSIVE: 20th Century Fox has pre-emptively acquired The Guysmaids, a comedy spec script written by Danny Segal and Isaac Schamis, and produced by Kenya Barris.

Specifics about the storyline are being kept under wraps. Barris will produce the feature through his production company, Khalabo Ink Society, as part of the label’s overall film deal with the studio.  20th Century Fox SVP of Production Jason Young will oversee the project. Barris has grown Khalabo Ink Society with the goal of establishing it as a creative collective, where collaboration is fostered and new talent can thrive, with a focus on socially conscious storytelling that reflects our culture and tackles contemporary issues and themes.

Segal and Schamis are currently writers on the Freeform comedy Grown-ish, a spinoff of Barris’ award-winning ABC series Black-ish, where the pair landed their first major writing gig.

Upcoming feature projects for Khalabo Ink Society include Son of Shaft from director Tim Story slated for a June 2019 release; Paramount’s Coming 2 America, the sequel to John Landis’ 1980s classic that starred Eddie Murphy; and an animated feature based on the songs of Bob Marley.

Segal and Schamis are represented by CAA and Morris Yorn Barnes Levine Krintzman Rubenstein Kohner & Gellman. Barris is represented by CAA, Artists First, and Morris Yorn Levine Krintzman Rubenstein Kohner & Gellman.
