‘SNL’: Matt Damon’s Christmas As The Weinstein Co. Holiday Ornament Isn’t The Same At The Back Of The Tree

By Bruce Haring, Nellie Andreeva

It’s the most wonderful time of the year – except if you’re a Christmas ornament banished to the back of the tree.

The premise: A drunk Santa ornament (Beck Bennett) is hung on the back of the Christmas tree alongside an old Good Will Hunting ornament (Matt Damon) and other tacky ornaments (Kenan Thompson, Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryant, Cecily Strong, Mikey Day) only seen by the wall.

Their sad and hilarious stories tell Santa of how they arrived at this particularly ignominious spot: some are broken, some are souvenirs from Cleveland airports, others are relics whose cultural impact has passed, like Harry Potter and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani.

But the saddest tale of all is told by the souvenir ornament played by Damon: a promotional¬†Good Will Hunting¬†item whose batteries are now running low. Adding insult to injury, there’s a “Happy Holidays From the Weinstein Company” message on the back of his t-shirt that makes it imperative to keep him hidden.

The 1997 Good Will Hunting, starring Damon and co-starring his friend Ben Affleck, which earned the duo a writing Oscar, was actually produced by Harvey and Bob Weinstein’s previous company, Miramax Films, which now has new owners. TWC also was sold earlier this year after going through bankruptcy in the fallout of the sexual misconduct allegations against Harvey Weinstein.
