ABC Midseason Schedule: ‘A Million Little Things’ On Thursday, ‘Dancing With the Stars’ On Break, ‘Whiskey’ & ‘Fix’ Slotted

A Million Little Things

UPDATED: ABC is going all-in on freshman drama series A Million Little Things with a Thursday 9 PM slot for the rest of its first season. Meanwhile, after two installments in the fall — regular and junior — the network’s reality stalwart Dancing with the Stars will be taking a break. It is not on ABC’s midseason schedule for the first time ever but is expected to return next fall. The reason — American Idol. Last season, ABC aired a special Bachelor installment as a counter-programming to the Winter Olympics and an abbreviated athletes edition of Dancing, which did not debut until April 30..

Dancing With The Stars

This time around, The Bachelor will be running through March 11 in Dancing‘s Monday slot. Idol will premiere its second season on Sunday, March 3, and is expected to add a Monday installment on March 18. It will lead to new drama The Fix, which will succeed The Good Doctor in the 10 PM hour after the medical drama wraps its 18-episode season.

A Million Little Things‘ move to Thursday is only the second time since Shondaland’s TGIT Thursday lineup was launched in fall 2014 that a non-Shondaland has been given the prized post-Grey’s Anatomy berth. (The first time was in fall 2016 when new drama Notorious was temporarily slotted there as regular dweller Scandal was delayed because of star Kerry Washington’s pregnancy).

To make room for A Million Little things, Grey’s spinoff Station 19, which has a 17-episode order, will go on the bench. It will return after AMLT ends its 17-episode season, on March 7, joined by another Shondaland drama series, For The People, at 10 PM, succeeding How To Get Away with Murder, to restore a TGIT lineup.

Last year, ABC slotted Shondaland legal drama For the People on Tuesday instead of Thursday, with Quantico replacing HTGAWM in spring. Both Station 19 and For the People are expected to wrap their runs within the regular season.

Succeeding A Million Little Things in the Wednesday 10 PM hour will be new action drama Whiskey Cavalier starring Scott Foley and Lauren Cohen as ABC is opting for a more comedic one-hour to follow its comedy block. The network’s third midseason drama series, the soapy Grand Hotel, will launch in the summer, following summer staple The Bachelorette on Monday.

In other scheduling moves, veteran newsmagazine 20/20 will expand to two hours on Friday (ABC aired reality series Child Support in the 9 PM hour in the fall, while Shark Tank will move to the Sunday 10 PM hour. It will follow Idol, replacing the Alec Baldwin talk show, which had been banished to Saturday after dismal ratings. Today’s news follows the midseason schedule ABC recently announced for its comedy series, which includes The Goldbergs spinoff Schooled getting the post-Goldbergs Wednesday time period.

A Million Little Things has been a quiet success for ABC. It got off to a modest start in linear Live+same day ratings before quickly stabilizing and has maintained virtually the same L+SD levels since Episode 2. But it’s been delayed viewing where the serialized drama has excelled, regularly posting the biggest Live+3 % lift on Wednesday and emerging as one of the top percentage gainers on broadcast TV. AMLT has logged triple-digit L+7 increases on each of its telecasts to date among adults 18-49, and  its Nov. 11 episode scored its best yet spike with a +157% jump over its L+SD rating. The new ABC drama also delivered its biggest total viewer lift on its most-recent airing, with a +107% jump from L+SD to L+7.
