Jane the Virgin creator/executive producer Jennie Snyder Urman has teamed with veteran development executive Joanna Klein to launch Sutton St. Productions. The company will be based at CBS Television Studios under Urman’s overall deal there. Sutton St. already has several high profile series set for development. They include Riches To Rags, a multi-camera comedy at CBS headlined and executive produced by Jane standout Jaime Camil, and You’re Killing Me, a comedy at CBS All Access executive produced by Jane star Gina Rodriguez who could potentially act in it. The two projects join the recently announced Jane the Virgin spinoff in the works at the CW and medical drama Family Emergency at CBS.
In Riches To Rags, written by Will & Grace executive producer Alex Herschlag, when an outrageously wealthy trust fund baby is cut off by his father, he and his wife move into her sister’s Reseda condo where they delight in the “charms” of the working class but mourn the loss of being the 1% of the 1%.
Camil executive produces via his production company ECABA alongside Herschlag, Urman and Klein as well as Jane exec producer Ben Silverman who also exec produces the Jane the Virgin spinoff. Camil himself often had been talked about for a potential Jane spinoff built around his larger-than-life character, telenovela star Rogelio De La Vega.
Co-written by Urman and former Jane the Virgin co-executive producer David Rosenthal, You’re Killing Me for CBS All Access centers on Gracie who thought she was cursed with an overbearing mother. But when her mom dies unexpectedly and haunts Gracie for real, Gracie’s worst nightmare becomes her mom’s dream come true. Urman, Rosenthal and Rodriguez executive produce with Klein and Emily Gipson.
Sutton St. Productions, whose mandate is to create programming with an eye toward strong female characters and stories, was named after the street Urman and Klein lived on. Klein, most recently SVP, Scripted Development at Lifetime Network, was previously SVP of Scripted Series at the CW where she got to work with Urman, and the two have been close friends.
Urman’s Jane the Virgin is heading into its fifth and final season. Urman is also currently spearheading the CW’s Charmed, which received a full-season pickup.
At Lifetime, Klein oversaw development and production on such series as UnReal, You and the upcoming Jenji Kohan one-hour dramedy American Princess. Her resume also includes stints as VP of Scripted Series at Regency TV and VP, Scripted Series at Lionsgate.
“Jennie and Joanna are singular talents and a potent combination,” said CBS TV Studio president David Stapf. “Jennie’s writing and producing skill and Joanna’s ability to shepherd a project will place them in a select class of production entities. We are extremely proud of our partnership with them.”
