UPDATE, MONDAY 9 PM after 4:26 PM post: There was buzz today that Rita Moreno was joining Jon M. Chu’s feature take of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Tony-winning musical In the HeightsWhat actually occurred, we hear, is that the production expressed interest in the West Side Story Oscar winner for the role of Abuela Claudia, but talks did not commence. We’ll let you know if that changes. At this point, Moreno is not joining In The Heights.

Anthony Ramos, who previously appeared in the original Broadway cast of Miranda’s Broadway juggernaut Hamilton, is set to play Usnavi, the bodega owner at the center of the action in the Washington Heights-set musical. He also played Usnavi in the Kennedy Center production.

Deadline exclusively reported in May that Warner Bros wrapped a $50 million deal to acquire film rights to the musical. The property was the subject of a hot auction after it was extracted from The Weinstein Company ahead of TWC’s bankruptcy. Hollywood Reporter originally had the news about Moreno’s rumored attachment. Warner Bros.’ In The Heights is opening on June 26, 2020.
