‘The Wife’ & ‘We The Animals’ Bow Strong; ‘Three Identical Strangers’ at $10.5M in 2nd Month of Release: Specialty Box Office

Sony Classics’ The Wife with Glenn Close and Jonathan Pryce topped out a group of newcomer limited releases that mostly did decent numbers this weekend. The 2017 Toronto debut by Björn Runge grossed $111,137 in four New York and Los Angeles locations in the three-day estimate, averaging $27,784.

Sundance breakout We The Animals by Jeremiah Zagar from The Orchard also had a nice launch, playing three theaters in New York and L.A., for $66,261 and a $22,087 per theater average. Ethan Hawke had two films out this weekend, one in which he stars and another he directed.

Roadside Attractions/Lionsgate

Roadside Attractions/Lionsgate’s Juliet, Naked with Hawke, Rose Byrne and Chris O’Dowd launched in four theaters, grossing $60,922, averaging $15,230. Sundance Selects opened Hawke’s Blaze, which he co-wrote and directed, in three locations exclusively in Austin, TX over the weekend. The Sundance premiere grossed $45,342, averaging slightly lower than Juliet, Naked at $15,114.

Music Box Films, meanwhile, opened Emmanuel Finkiel’s French-language, Memoir Of War with two runs, grossing $10,710 ($5,355 PTA). Oscilloscope added one run for Madeline’s Madeline in its second frame, grossing $19,450 ($9,725 PTA) in the three-day estimate.

FilmRise expanded The Miseducation Of Cameron Post with Chloë Moretz in its third weekend, taking in $138K in 72 theaters ($1,917 PTA). Sony Classics jumped The Puzzle in its fourth weekend, grossing nearly $218K ($2,018 PTA). Summit Entertainment/Lionsgate’s Blindspotting crossed $4M in its cume, while A24’s Eighth Grade is now over $11.6M Neon’s Three Identical Twins went over $10.5M marking its second month in theaters, while Focus Features’ Won’t You Be My Neighbor? edged over $22M.

Sony Classics betrothed drama The Wife to its usual four New York and L.A. locations in its first weekend with solid results. Starring Glenn Close, Jonathan Pryce, Christian Slater and Max Irons, the Toronto ’17 debut outpaced the weekend’s specialty newcomers with a $111,137 gross in four theaters, averaging $27,784, the highest PTA among all reporting films as of Sunday morning. The opening average is the best for SPC this year and one of the best for a narrative specialty feature this summer.

Sony Classics picked up the title out of last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, though it decided to hold off on releasing it until now. 

Out of Toronto, there was so much competition for awards last year that it made sense to wait until the following year,” said SPC co-president Michael Barker earlier this week. “It seemed ideal to do end of summer. We have had a good track record with [releases] at this time, including Junebug (2005, $2.67M), Frozen River (2008, $2.51M) and Blue Jasmine (2013, $33.4M)…People have already seen these Hollywood movies. In our history, we’ve seen that there’s been room in the [end of summer] for an intimate, adult movie. It’s a great respite.” 

A24’s Eighth Grade currently reigns with the year’s best specialty weekend start, opening mid-July with a PTA of $65,949.

The Wife will expand to Chicago, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., and Phoenix the following weekend, with an additional eight to ten cities Labor Day weekend. SPC expects it to be at its widest the weekend of September 21.

The Orchard

Sundance debut We The Animals opened to pretty impressive numbers given that the title, directed by Jeremiah Zagar, does not include a number of big stars. Released via The Orchard, We The Animals grossed $66,261 in three theaters in its first weekend, averaging $22,087.

Said The Orchard when reporting numbers Sunday: “We are extremely pleased with the opening weekend grosses for the extraordinary We The Animals. Overwhelmingly positive reviews helped drive a diverse audience to theaters and we are seeing 1st-in-complex results for both of our New York locations. These numbers position the film very well for the long end-of-summer rollout that will unfold over the next couple of months.”

Jesse Peretz’s Juliet, Naked based on the novel by Nick Hornby rolled out to four theaters Friday via Roadside Attractions/Lionsgate, grossing $60,922 ($15,230 average). The feature will head to five additional markets next weekend and will be in select markets around the country by Labor Day weekend.

Juliet, Naked stars Ethan Hawke, who also had his third directorial narrative, Blaze, in three Austin theaters this weekend. Distributor Sundance Selects is giving the feature a Texas run before opening in New York September 7 and in L.A. September 14. In its three locations in the Texas capital, Blaze grossed $45,342 for a $15,114 average.

Sundance Selects said Sunday that Blaze, based on the life of singer-songwriter Blaze Foley, was “the number one film in all three Austin complexes, out-grossing major studio commercial releases in the process.” Blaze will continue its Texas first expansion next week with Dallas and Houston opening on Friday.

Oscilloscope added one theater for Madeline’s Madeline in its second outing, grossing $19,450 from its two locations Friday to Sunday, averaging an estimated $9,725. In its first weekend, the title by Josephine Decker, grossed $18K.

FilmRise took The Miseducation of Cameron Post to 72 theaters this weekend, up from the previous frame’s 25 runs. Directed by Desiree Akahavan, the Sundance feature grossed $138K, averaging $1,917. Last weekend, the title grossed $123,699 ($4,948 average). Its three-week come is now $404,676.

Sony Pictures Classics

Kelly Macdonald starrer Puzzle played an additional 64 locations in its fourth weekend in theaters, grossing $217,986 in 108 theaters in the three-day, averaging $2,018. Last weekend, the title took in $161K ($3,660 average). The SPC release has cumed $733,605.

Summit Entertainment/Lionsgate’s Blindspotting crossed $4M in its fifth weekend outing. The title took in $110K Friday to Sunday, averaging $2,340.

Bleecker Street doc McQueen is closing in on seven figures. In its fifth weekend, the feature about late British fashion designer Alexander McQueen grossed $111,346 in 95 theaters, its widest to date, averaging $1,172, bringing its cume to just over $979K.

After spending some time in fairly wide release, A24’s Eighth Grade is now at over $11.6M. The title, directed by Bo Burnham, grossed $740K in the three-day in 542 theaters, averaging $1,365. The number is impressive given that Eighth Grade has been in theaters since mid-July. The title ranked 17th in the box office as of Sunday morning, though all of the other movies above it were in far more many theaters save for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom($1.155M gross), which played a relatively closer number of 814 theaters.

The summer’s non-fiction stars continue to pass thresholds. Neon’s Three Identical Strangers went over eight figures last week, landing at over $10.56M as of Sunday. The feature by Tim Wardle grossed $498,400 in 276 locations, averaging $1,806.

And Won’t You Be My Neighbor? crossed another another box office milestone. Over the weekend, the Focus Features release grossed $220K in 2016 theaters, bringing its 11 week total to $22,082,000.
