The executive producers behind MTV’s hit reality show Buckwild are back in Appalachia for a follow-up series, West Virginia Wilder. Production is currently underway in Morgantown and Charleston, West Virginia on the series, described as a comedic follow-doc about a group of hard-working and fearless teens and twenty-somethings. West Virginia Wilder is being pitched to cable networks and digital platforms with an eye toward a summer launch.

Buckwild was a breakout, becoming the highest-rated Thursday cable show in the key 12-34 demo in its freshman season in 2013. The reality series was renewed for a second season, which was in production when the 21-year-old star Shain Gandee died unexpectedly, leading to the series’ end. Among the cast members of West Virginia Wilder is Spencer “Tar” Tarley, a relative of the late Gandee.

West Virginia Wilder is executive produced by former Buckwild EPs JP Williams, Jennifer Novak-Riker and John Stevens.

“We are always searching for interesting characters across the country and when we recently went to Morgantown, we struck gold,” said Novak-Riker. “The female cast members are strong and dynamic and lead this wild bunch, which is refreshing to see.”

As for whether West Virginia Wilder could follow Buckwild on MTV, “MTV knows we are back in West Virginia and has asked us to bring in the project,” the producers said. We are currently pitching all of the cable and streaming buyers to find the best home for the series.”
