‘New Girl’ Ratings Hit Finale Low In Series Ender, Celtics Win Sees NBA Up For ESPN

On a night of a big NBA playoff game and finales for Black-ish (1.2/5), NCIS: New Orleans (0.9/4), Chicago Med (0.9/4) and the canceled Rise (0.7/3), the real end came for New Girl (0.6/3) on Tuesday after seven seasons.

In the short term, last night’s one-hour finale of New Girl was up a tenth from last week. However, in a sign that the end perhaps couldn’t come too soon for the Zooey Deschanel-led Fox comedy, the 9-10 PM ender was also down 33% from the 8 PM Season 6 finale of April 4, 2017. With a tepid lead-in of a Masterchef Junior (0.5/2) clip show (where Lethal Weapon once was), that’s an all-time season-finale low for New Girl.

Most of the other finales were steady with their most recent originals with the exception of Chicago Med taking an 18% drop from its May 8 episode.

Not taking a drop at all was Game 2 of the NBA Eastern Conference Finals on ESPN last night. With a 6.5 in metered market ratings, the Boston Celtics’ 107-94 victory over LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers was up a whooping 71% from the comparable matchup of last year between the same two teams. As the Celtics now lead the series 2-0 over the 2016 champs, last night’ faceoff is looking to be the highest-rated Eastern Conference Game 2 in the past six years for the Disney-owned sports outlet.

Overall on the upfronts-strutting Big 4, ABC was the winner last night in thanks to an even Roseanne (2.6/12), the top show of the night – or as execs at the other Disney-owned outlet loved to say over and over, the top show on TV right now. With a 1.2/5 overall like last week, ABC also saw Splitting Up Together (1.0/4) and For the People (0.5/2) matching their May 8 results, while The Middle dipped 7%.

Tied for first place last week, legally swinging CBS was in the second spot in adults 18-49 last night with a 1.0/4 but tops among viewers with 10.49 million tuning in. The House of Moonves had the most-watched show of the night with NCIS (1.2/5) pulling in 12.5 million sets of eyeballs. Having seen Pauley Perrette’s much hyped exit last week, the Mark Harmon-led procedural took a 25% drop last night in the key demo.

NBC’s The Voice (1.4/6) was even with the fast affiliates of its May 8 show, which went down a tenth in the final numbers. The CW’s The Flash (0.7/3) and The 100 (0.4/1) were also the same as their respective results last week.
