This was a nice surprise. A month and a half before Ryan Murphy embarks on a new streaming chapter in his career with a blockbuster $300 million overall deal at Netflix, the  Emmy, Golden Globe and Peabody Award winner showed up at the Fox upfront presentation to throw his support behind broadcast television.

Murphy, co-creator and executive producer of Fox’s 9-1-1, touted the success of the breakout freshman crime procedural, the network’s No.1 series. The writer, producer and director was joined on stage by 9-1-1 stars Angela Bassett, Peter Krause and new cast addition Jennifer Love Hewitt.

“I started my career in broadcast,” Murphy said. He noted his hit Fox musical dramedy Glee and told the story of how he and Fox chairman Dana Walden honed in on the idea for 9-1-1.

Murphy had said that “I still want to be involved in all of the shows that I’m doing, I don’t want to leave them” after his Netflix pact starts July 1.

He reaffirmed that today, saying about 9-1-1: “I want you to know that we plan to build on the success in Season 2.”
