‘Some Like It Hot’ Musical Headed To Broadway In 2020

A new musical version of classic Billy Wilder comedy Some Like It Hot is coming to Broadway in 2020, with a score by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, who won a Tony for their work on Hairspray.

The show is from the Shubert Organization and producers Craig Zadan & Neil Meron, who acquired the rights to the 1959 film from MGM. The film, which starred Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis and Marilyn Monroe, has long ranked among Hollywood’s most cherished comedies.

The film has previously been adapted for Broadway. Sugar, which starred Robert Morse, Tony Roberts and Elaine Joyce, opened in 1972 and ran for more than 500 performances. It was revived on the West End in 1992, using the film’s original title.

“We are grateful to MGM for allowing us to tackle the challenge of translating the film’s singular energy and magic to the stage,” said Zadan, Meron and Philip J. Smith and Robert E. Wankel on behalf of The Shubert Organization in a joint statement.

While stage adaptations of screen hits have long been a driver of Broadway activity, this year is seeing a wave of interest in the transition. The Tony Award nominations, announced earlier this month, were led by Mean Girls and SpongeBob SquarePants, with 12 nods apiece.

Jonathan Glickman, president of MGM’s Motion Picture Group and head of Live Stage Theatrical Productions called Some Like It Hot “one of the crown jewels of MGM’s library. Craig, Neil and the Shubert Organization have assembled a world class creative team and we can’t wait to see it on Broadway.”

The book is by playwright Matthew Lopez, whose two-parter The Inheritance, which deals with gay life in the aftermath of the AIDS crisis, recently opened at London’s Young Vic.

Some Like It Hot will be directed and choreographed by Casey Nicholaw. His production of Dreamgirls is playing on London’s West End and he has three shows currently on Broadway: The Book of Mormon, Aladdin and Mean Girls, whose Tony haul includes nominations for direction and choreography.

Some Like It Hot is the first show to be produced under the previously announced development and production deal between The Shubert Organization and Zadan & Meron. Roy Furman, Robert Greenblatt (a veteran theater producer who is also entertainment chairman of NBCUniversal), and the Nederlander Organization are also part of the show’s producing team.

Shaiman (music & lyrics) and Scott Wittman (lyrics) are also collaborating on Disney’s upcoming Christmas movie release Mary Poppins Returns.
