‘Blue Bloods’ Ratings Top Friday With Engaging Season Finale; ‘OUAT’ Rises

Concluding a year that started in tragedy with a celebration, Blue Bloods (0.8/3) wrapped up its eighth season last night on top.

While the CBS NYPD family drama was down 11% from the Season 7 ender of May 5, 2017 to hit a finale low, Blue Bloods was tied with lead-in Hawaii Five-O (0.8/3) for the highest rated show of the night among adults 18-49, and took the viewership prize with 8.74 million tuning in. That’s up a tenth in the demo from last week’s fast affiliates series low for the Tom Selleck-led series, and a rise of 13% in total sets of eyeballs.

As the night kicked off by the official debut of a near timeslot-winning Undercover Boss: Celebrity Edition (0.6/3), featuring a radically transformed Olympian Gabby Douglas, the House of Moonves won primetime Friday in viewers yet again, with 6.94 million watching. Aided by a Five-O that was up a tenth, CBS matched a Meghan Markle: An American Princess (0.7/3) airing on Fox for the second week in a row among the 18-49s, with a 0.7/3 rating.

Of course, as Black Friday cancellations left a slew of shows gutted and Brooklyn Nine-Nine found a new home on NBC, Blue Bloods wasn’t the only series saying “au revoir” last night. In stage one of its two-part Season 7 ender and series finale, ABC’s Once Upon A Time (0.5/3) mocked itself a bit and set things up for a big exit. The fairy tale extravaganza rose 25% in the demo from its May 4 show, but was down 38% from the penultimate episode of Season 6 on May 7 last year, a show that aired on a Sunday. Hitting a stride of sorts, the Disney-owned net saw both Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. (0.5/3) and news mag 20/20 (0.5/2) also rise 25% among the 18-49s from last week.

The Season 1 finale of the April 2-renewed Dynasty (0.1/1) saw the CW reboot dive 50% in the demo from a week ago. Shifted to Fridays last month, lead-out Life Sentence (0.1/1) took the same fall as Dynasty in the ratings but, as was announced earlier this week, will not be returning next season.

Over on NBC, Blindspot (0.5/2) matched its performance of May 4, as did the 9 – 11 PM Dateline (0.7/3).

So, as the 2018-2019 season starts to take its final shape, let’s bid farewell to all those who didn’t make the cut – and get ready for the upfronts next week in NYC.
