Hulu Strikes Deal For More Spanish-Language Content From NBCUniversal’s Telemundo

UPDATED to include digital partnerships with E! and SportsManias

Hulu and NBCUniversal have reached an agreement to bring more of Telemundo’s Spanish-language programing to the streaming service.

The deal, announced this morning, represents Telemundo’s largest pact with an an on-demand streaming service for its Spanish-language content.

Under the agreement, Hulu will add 28 TV series to its catalog, representing more than 3,500 episodes of programming, from Telemundo and Universo. These shows include El Señor de los Cielos, Señora Acero, Alguien Te Mira, La Casa de al Lado, Perro Amor, The Riveras and I Love Jenni.

Hulu has been investing in content, as it looks to spur growth and emerge as a solid contender to industry leader Netflix.

The service has surpassed 20 million U.S. subscribers — an 18% gain since the end of last year. Hulu’s highlighted new content deals at last week’s Digital Content NewFront, including a multiyear arrangement with DreamWorks Animation and an exclusive streaming deal for ABC’s new primetime drama The Good Doctor.

“Hulu is the complete TV experience for consumers, offering both live and on-demand programming and more consumer choice than ever before,” CEO Randy Freer said at the event.

During its Upfront presentation today, Telemundo announced other digital deals.

In partnership with E!, Telemundo will develop a weekly bilingual entertainment show called The Mix, which will cover top entertainment news stories, conduct interviews with guests, and highlight Hispanic celebrities in fashion, style and beauty. The new show is scheduled to launch in October, prior to NBCUniversal’s broadcast of the Latin American Music Awards and the People’s Choice Awards. It will be available on TV and on digital platforms.

Telemundo is creating a bilingual series called Fuerza, celebrating the stories of multicultural women leading up to the FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019. The 14-week show will be distributed on YouTube, Twitter, Snap and Telemundo’s owned and operated sites.

SportsManias will partner with Telemundo Deportes to create a World Cup-themed keyboard, providing fans with animated soccer emojis. It will be available through the App Store and Google Play Store.
