How about that? Fox’s off-cycle multi-camera comedy pilot The Cool Kids (fka Cool Kids), from the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia team, rode its late momentum all the way to a series pickup. It is one of two new series orders at Fox today, along with the Danny Strong-produced legal drama Proven Innocent. Both come from Fox sibling 20th Century Fox TV.

Retirement-home comedy pilot The Cool Kids had kept a largely low profile despite solid testing and screenings until Fox and 20th TV, following the big return of Roseanne on ABC, recently set out to resurrect 20th TV’s former ABC multi-camera comedy series Last Man Standing starring Tim Allen.

While the deals for the new season of Last Man Standing are still being finalized, its imminent arrival shook up Fox’s comedy pilot field, giving a boost to The Cool Kids, which has become the first Fox comedy pilot this season to get a series order. It likely will to be paired with LMS on the fall scheduleEarly half-hour standout Rel is said to remain in contention, possibly for midseason, along with Dan the Weatherman.

On the drama side, Proven Innocent (fka Untitled David Elliott/Danny Strong) joins drama front-runner, The Passage, which yesterday became the first 2018 Fox pilot to get to series. Proven Innocent was one of two Fox drama pilots that were in a race for the network’s second drama slot, along with an Ilene Chaiken/Melissa Scrivner Love project starring Katie Holmes. With Holmes’ flawed FBI agent at the center, that drama has drawn parallels to Homeland. While pretty edgy for broadcast, I hear the pilot remains in contention, also possibly for midseason. I hear romantic musical drama Mixtape may be redeveloped.

Meanwhile, Proven Innocent gives Fox a potential procedural franchise, something the network has been looking to add to its portfolio since the end of Bones.
