Lee Daniels is staying in business with 20th Century Fox TV. The Empire and Star co-creator and executive producer has signed a new overall deal with the studio behind the hit series.

“Lee is not just an extraordinary writer and director, he’s a talent magnet who’s full of creative energy,” said Fox Television Group Chairmen and CEO’s Dana Walden and Gary Newman. “He’s also one of the most entertaining and authentic voices we’ve ever encountered. From Empire to Star, when you work with Lee on a project, you know you’re going to be spellbound not just by the idea, but also by how it’s filtered through his unique lens. He’s a creator with many more stories to tell and we’re grateful he’ll be telling them with us.”

The deal follows the recent fifth season renewal of Empire. The hip-hop family drama, from co-creators Daniels and Danny Strong, Imagine Television and 20th Century Fox TV, was an instant pop culture phenomenon when it debuted in January 2015. Four seasons in, the critically praised series starring Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson is off from its meteoric ratings heights but remains Fox’s No.2 series in adults 18-49 and total viewers.

Star, created by Daniels and Tom Donaghy, was just renewed for a third season.

“I’ve loved the creative freedom Fox has afforded me over the last several years and proud of the work that we’ve collectively achieved as a result of it,” said Daniels. “I’m excited to continue my time at the studio and produce television that isn’t only personal to my own stories, but also find undiscovered, diverse, new voices to bring to the small screen.”

Daniels’ feature credits include Precious and The Butler. He’s repped by CAA and attorney Jeanne Newman.

Lee joins an A-list roster of showrunners who have recently signed deals with the studio including Vali Chandrasekaran, Abraham Higginbotham, Sanaa Hamri, Tim Minear, Kurt Sutter, Rich Appel and Danielle Sanchez-Witzel.
