‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ Wins Audience Award At Series Mania Festival

The winners from Series Mania Lille/Hauts-de-France were presented tonight during the closing ceremony at Nouveau Siegle in Lille, France. The international competition ran from April 27 through this evening, honoring the cream of contemporary drama series.

Leading the way was The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which won the Audience Award as the crowd favorite among new titles screening their first series, with votes collected after each screening.  The series was created and directed by Amy Sherman-Palladino (USA), with production by Picrow and Amazon Studios. Its France broadcaster is Amazon Prime Video

The international jury, presided by Chris Brancato and composed of Maria Feldman, Maria Schrader, Clovis Cornillac and Pierre Lemaitre, gave four awards among the 10 series presented in world premiere.

The Grand Prize went to On The Spectrum, created by Dana Idisis and Yuval Shafferman (Israel), with direction by Yuval Shafferman and production from Sumayoko Mtd. The jury called it “a superb, funny, touching and deeply humanistic portrayal of the disabled people and those who love and care for them.”

The Jury’s Special Prize went to Il Miracolo, created by Niccolò Ammaniti (Italy), with direction by Ammaniti, Francesco Munzi and Lucio Pellegrini and production from Sky, Wildside, ARTE France and Kwaï . The Italia broadcaster was Sky, while the France and Germany broadcaster was Arte. The jury said it was Deeply intelligent and thought-provoking, this drama manages to find complexity in every level of society it examines.”

Best Actress honors went to Anna Mikhalkova, who won for her role in An Ordinary Woman. The daughter of  Oscar-winning Russian director Nikita Mikhalkov and the subject of an award-winning feature documentary, Mikhalkova’s series was created by Valery Fedorovich and Evgeny Nikishov (Russia), with direction from Boris Khlebnikov and production by Look Film, TV3 Channel, 1,2,3 Production. The Russia broadcaster was TV3 Channel.

The jury called her acting  A sensitive and nuanced performance of a strong woman who constantly has to repress her most private feelings to survive in a corrupted society.”The Best Actor award was given to Tommaso Ragno for Il Miracolo, which called his performance A surprising and rigorous performance that rings with truth about temptation and human nature while brilliantly defying our expectations at every turn.”

A word from the jury: “This was a very strong year for female roles, which made this decision particularly hard. But we really admired the performance of Anne Charrier who brings an unexpected complexity and humanity to the role of the police chief.”
