Univision Launches Subscription Streaming Service

Univision Communications Inc.

Univision launched a subscription streaming service to provide on-demand access to its Spanish-language programming and offer content from BBC Studios, RTVE, Televisa, Viacom and others.

The new SVOD service, announced this morning at a press briefing, is an extension of Univision’s live streaming service, Univision Now. Existing pay TV subscribers can gain access to the on-demand library for an additional $2.99 a month. New digital subscribers who want access to to Univision’s linear programming and the on-demand content for $7.99.

“Think of it as the epicenter of Spanish-language entertainment – anchored and curated by Univision and bringing together the best titles from around the globe by other leading media companies and content creators,” said Tonia O’Connor, Univision’s chief revenue officer.

Such over-the-top services are increasingly important to networks looking to reach a generation of viewers who may have canceled their cable subscription, or never signed up in the first place. Just yesterday, CBS talked about streaming as fueling the broadcaster’s subscriber growth in an era of cord-cutting.

The platform will be comprised of four new verticals: dramas, non-scripted programs, children’s programming and international telenovelas. Starting next month, subscribers will be able to watch content from Univision’s partners, including the BBC Studios’ drama about a troubled Catholic priest Broken, children’s animated series about friendship, Sarah & Duck, and the documentary Love & Hate Crime. The service also will offer RTVE’s historical drama Isabel S1-3, and modern drama Traición, and Viacom’s children series Fairly Odd Parents and Yo Soy Franky, and the reality show Acapulco Shore.

Comarex and RCN also plan to join as partners.

“We look forward to working collaboratively with Univision as they launch their service and deliver programming that represents the breadth of Spanish-language hits across our global properties, from top kids’ shows to groundbreaking reality formats that are enjoyed throughout the Spanish-speaking world,” said Sheri Weidner, Viacom’s senior vice president of partnerships.
