‘Coco’ Sweet With $800M Milestone At Worldwide Box Office

Disney/Pixar’s Best Animated Feature Oscar winner Coco has strummed up $800.5M at the worldwide box office. This is Pixar’s fifth film to hit the milestone and comes as the Lee Unkrich/Adrian Molina-directed toon will soon wind up play.

The split on the story of young Miguel and his musical dreams is $209.7M domestic and $590.8M at the international box office. After initially releasing in Mexico way back on October 27 last year, the movie has pretty much wrapped its global run. It continues to play in Japan where it has now grossed $41.4M. In full, it’s expected to see a final overseas tally around $592M-$593M.

The otherworldly adventure of music, mystery and the most unusual family reunion has had a storied run, beginning in Mexico where it was timed to the Dia de Muertos holiday period after opening the Morelia Film Festival. It ultimately became the biggest movie ever in the market (in local currency) and now boasts a $57.9M cume.

The only hub to beat Mexico was China where Coco‘s themes of family and the afterlife struck a distinct chord with audiences, propelling it to become the No. 2 animated movie ever in the market (local currency). It was granted a rare extended run for a Hollywood film in the Middle Kingdom and was a big win for Pixar whose titles have traditionally not found similar favor there as they do elsewhere. The box office ultimately finaled at $183.5M. (Coco could also have the knock-on effect of helping set up The Incredibles 2 in China, mixing recent positive brand recognition with superhero and family themes.)

Behind China, Mexico and Japan, Miguel and his trusty dog Dante’s Top 10 is rounded out by France ($33.2M), the UK ($26.1M), Korea ($25.9M), Spain ($21.4M), Argentina ($17.6M), Italy ($14.4M) and Germany ($12.3M).

The previous Pixar titles to cross $800M worldwide are Toy Story 3 ($1.066B), Finding Dory ($1,029B), Finding Nemo ($940M) and Inside Out ($858M). Each of those, save Dory, is also a Best Animated Feature Oscar winner.
