YouTube Orders ‘Wayne’ Action Comedy Series Produced By ‘Deadpool’ Writers

EXCLUSIVE: YouTube has picked up to series its action comedy pilot Wayne starring Mark McKenna (Sing Street) and Ciara Bravo (Big Time Rush), from creator Shawn Simmons, which is executive produced by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, writers of the hit Deadpool movie franchise. The 10-episode series, which hails from Endeavor Content, is slated to debut on YouTube Red in 2018. It was originally ordered to pilot in December.

Written and created by Simmons, Wayne is described as a gritty and sometimes bloody tale in which 15-year-old Wayne (McKenna) sets out on a dirt bike with his new crush Del (Bravo) to take back the 1978 Pontiac Trans Am that was stolen from his father before he died. It is Wayne and Del against the world. Joshua J. Williams (Mudbound) will recur as Orlando.

Reese and Wernick executive produce with Greg Coolidge (Ride Along) and Kirk Ward. Iain B. MacDonald (Episodes,  Shameless) directed the pilot, which featured Dean Winters and Mike O’Malley as guest stars.

YouTube Red is currently available in the US, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico and Korea. Next for the streaming platform is the May 2 debut of high-profile new action series Cobra Kai, a sequel to the Karate Kid movie franchise.
