In the midst of production on Season 2 of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel—a series which garnered two Golden Globes, two Critics’ Choice Awards and a PGA Award in its first run—stars Alex Borstein, Michael Zegen and Marin Hinkle stopped in at Deadline’s Tribeca Studio yesterday to tease a bit of what we can expect from the series’ second season.

An Amazon original comedy series, Maisel follows a 1950s housewife (Rachel Brosnahan) who decides to channel her considerable energies into becoming a stand-up comedian, raising the eyebrows and defying the expectations of everyone around her.

In Deadline’s Tribeca chat with the cast, front and center was the team’s trip to Paris early on in their Season 2 production schedule, which the actors spoke about only in vague terms. Discussing a strange cast trip to Paris Disneyland while overseas, the Mrs. Maisel cast focused primarily on the experience of being in Paris, rather than on what we can expect from the show’s upcoming Paris storylines.

“We shot for a couple weeks in Paris and I have to say, I would be looking out and I actually thought there was a scrim, as if they had put something up for the background. I said, ‘That’s so beautiful, what they’ve created,’ and someone was like, ‘Are you crazy? That’s Paris,'” Hinkle said. “But it was amazing to have that city as our background.”

During the conversation, Borstein gave her take on why The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel has been received as well as it has, and how it has played amidst the turmoil of the current American presidential administration.

“I think it’s good timing, just because the world’s such a downer right now. It’s the most depressing time to be alive, and this is an optimistic show,” the comedian said. “This is a little ant trying to move a rubber tree plant, and you want to root for her—and you know it’s one show on the air [where] no one’s smuggling cocaine in their ass.”

“It’s so different, and a breath of fresh air,” Borstein continued. “I think it’s a good time, in that way.”
