‘Grown-ish’ Star Yara Shahidi On What’s In Store For Spinoff’s Sophomore Year – The Contenders Emmys

Grown-ish star Yara Shahidi teased Season 2 of Freeform’s Black-ish spinoff series today at Deadline’s The Contenders Emmys, and reflected on her transition from the show’s mothership Black-ish.

“I know little to nothing about Season 2. What I can say is I’m really looking forward to Zoey actually going to class,” Shahidi said during ABC Studios’ panel session at the DGA Theater. “Season 2, I’m excited to have a breath, in terms of extending these storylines. Zoey’s now a more determined and more settled human, so I’m looking forward to episodes of her being super obstinate, because she has her perspective and no one’s going to shift it.”

Describing the experience of moving on to college with Grown-ish as she submitted her own college applications as “art imitates life imitates art,” Shahidi expressed appreciation for the tonal and narrative space that exists between Black-ish and its young adult-oriented spinoff, allowing both series room to breathe.

Sharing her excitement in having up-and-comers on the series behind the scenes, Shahidi also expressed gratitude for a fanbase that could identify with the series’ universal themes. “I love the people who understand Zoey’s uncertainty, growing up and figuring out her own transition as a person of color, as a young woman, as somebody developing her own political identity in the midst of this political climate,” Shahidi said.

“What I love is that the audience gravitates towards different characters for different reasons. Each character has their own perspective, and there’s no right perspective.”
