‘Empire’ Rules Demo, ‘Survivor’ Takes Total Viewers, ‘Alex Inc.’ Ups Retention

Fox’s Empire (1.8 demo rating, 5.80 million viewers) ruled 8 PM in the demo Wednesday night. And while ticking up in total viewers week to week, the music drama ceded that derby to Survivor: Ghost Island (1.5, 7.92M). CBS’s competition series remained Wednesday’s most-watched program and topped primetime for a seventh consecutive week in viewers (7.92m).

At 8:30 PM, third week of ABC’s Alex Inc. (0.9, 3.56M) hung on to previous week’s demo rating, despite a 14% drop in its The Goldbergs lead-in (1.2, 5.20).  That put Alex’s retention at 75% this week.

Empire lead-out Star (1.3, 4.29M) hung on to Fox’s demo lead at 9 PM, though it shared top spot in its first half hour with ABC’s Modern Family (1.4, 4.92M). CBS’s SEAL Team (1.0, 6.29M) returned to snag total viewers in its hour.

With its first original in three weeks, NBC’s Chicago P.D. (1.1, 5.84M) took the 10 PM hour in the demo and total viewers, besting CBS’s Criminal Minds (0.9, 5.15M) and ABC’s Designated Survivor (0.6, 3.36M).

Fox (1.6, 5.04M) finished first on the night in the demo and third in total viewers. CBS (1.1, 6.45M) took total viewer and came in second in the demo. NBC (1.0, 5.45M) ranked No. 3 in demo and No. 2 in total viewers. ABC (1.0, 4.06M) tied NBC in the age bracket but finished fourth in overall audience. CW (0.3, 1.25M) followed, airing a 90-minute Harry Potter: A History of Magic special (0.3, 1.31M) and Masters of Illusion repeat (0.2, 1.06M).
