Sinclair Broadcasting Slaps CNN Attack Video On Its Stations’ Websites

Sinclair Broadcast Group, continuing to conscript its local TV stations as soldiers in Donald Trump’s war on media, has slapped a video attacking CNN at the top of those stations’ websites (watch it below).

Sinclair, which has been in talks to enter a $4 billion merger with Tribune Media, recently compelled anchors of its stations to read a promo attacking “fake news.”

More than a year ago on Last Week Tonight, John Oliver had blasted the right-leaning TV station group for injecting its politics into its stations’ local news, via scripts for anchors to use on a “must run” basis.

This month, CNN reported that Sinclair, which owns and operates nearly 200 television stations in the country, also mandates that local anchors of its stations read the Donald Trumpian promo script about the “troubling trend of irresponsible, one-sided news stories plaguing our country.”

But it was Deadspin’s posting of a supercut of Sinclair anchors reading the script that really got people to sit up and take notice when the video went viral. House of Cards creator Beau Willimon called it “what corporate authoritarian propaganda looks like”:

Sinclair is fighting back, attacking CNN and its media pundit Brian Stelter as “hypocritical and dishonest” in a video you can see on all of its local stations’ websites.

“The following is evidence of a major media company’s dishonesty and hypocrisy” the video begins.

It was posted to the sites the day after Stelter’s most recent report on Sinclair about low morale at the company.

Stelter has responded to Sinclair’s new attack video, tweeting “there’s a huge difference between my coverage and Sinclair’s mandatory promos. No one tells me what to say. But these anchors were told exactly what to say.”
